Club 91 on KCPR - Drub 91 Invasion with Nikoo and Rootlee

It's the founding hosts of KCPR'S DrubFX back on and in full force; Nikoo and Rootlee are back to do damage, once again, making a return trip to Club 91. In this case, it's a full-on Drub 91 invasion filled with bass-heavy beats and lyrical waxings courtesy of the Roots man. Can you handle three hours of Drub 91?! Have a listen for yourself! Jah!

Club 91 on KCPR - Spring Quarter Kick-Off with Andrew Westby Back on Deck!

It's a new quarter at KCPR, and with it comes Club 91 back in full force.

And operating on full force this week is Andrew Westby, who's already made several trips to the station for previous shows. It's another three-hour selection made for bangin' and dancin' until you can stand no more.

DJ Sean Crandal is back, and he brings with him a lot of heavy hitters he's recently added to his music collection. We thought that it made for a fitting end to our little dance mix show for 2010. Lady Sween, our originally-scheduled guest DJ, sent word that she wasn't able to make the trip from Santa Barbara. But no worries; we'll reschedule her appearance for January 2011. Stay tuned for more info on that one.

Meanwhile, big ups to Andrew Westby for filling in for a second appearance this quarter to the KCPR studio. The man who is now the face of Stillwater Records comes correct, fresh off of his gig at Take Me There last weekend.

Club 91 on KCPR with Guest DJ Lytic

Last night's Club 91 got a little crazy with some bass-heavy action. Sure, we've had quite a bit of bass lately, but added to a reference monitor and the two overhead monitors at the station was a subwoofer. Put all that together, and you got yourself some booming action.

DJ Lytic steps into the KCPR for his debut set on Club 91. He hasn't been DJing for very long, but he's already cut his teeth in local places such as MoTav (aka Mother's Tavern) and Native Lounge downtown. He brings his more adventurous vibe into the fold for this week's show.

Club 91 on KCPR with Guest DJ Sean Crandal from People, Inc.

First of all, the October 30th set with guest DJ Athelias was lost due to some tech-related shenanigans with the recording server. He'll return to the show sometime in 2011.

Meanwhile, on this episode of Club 91 we have DJ Sean Crandal making his debut appearance to the KCPR studio. He's been at the local DJ game for awhile, whether it's participating as a DJ or organizing events through his event outlet, The People, Inc.

The show was started a little late, plus unfortunately a bit of the tail end of the show, about roughly 15 minutes, was lost. If anything had to be lost, it was about a couple of songs. But we also had a good bookend interview that was also lost, but you'll get to listen to a little bit of him speaking a few words at the start of the show.

Club 91 on KCPR with Velanche in the MIx

Ah, the best-laid plans.

Due to some scheduling snafus, the guest DJ that I thought I had scheduled for this week didn't get the notice of said changes. Last week's DJ, Nikoo, was going to take the spot this week, but got bumped up a week when the DJ originally scheduled for that date backed out.

So instead of me starting off with a one-hour set, you'll have me for three. In the end, things worked out nicely. I think the set and the music selection are pretty solid, so I hope you enjoy the tunes and the mix. There's no playlist this week, but there were bunches of unreleased goodies included in my set.

In addition to his various DJ endeavors, he has helped resurrect local record label Stillwater Records, recently signing on local DJ Michael St. Patrick (who took the Club 91 stage last month). Expect some mix CDs from them both in the near future, with more plans in development.

So me and Mawkus went to go see Emynd for the 'More on the Floor' event just southeast of the Fashion District in Downtown LA. We got there a little after midnight expecting it to be packed. Los Angeles musta been sleeping because there weren't nearly as many people as there should've been. Half the people didn't even look as if they knew who the fuck Emynd was (sucks for them). Anyways, we went into the loft/warehouse space and watched Mike B spin for a little. We noticed the man from Philly was chillin right near the bar so we went to go chat it up. First impression: Emynd is one cool-ass dude. He didn't give off any type of cooler-than-thou vibe and was generally appreciative that we had come out to see him. I'm sure he would've been more appreciative had we been two hot chicks, but we're not, so whatevs. Anyway, it turns out that he's got a day job which takes him to France on occasion, he gets booked a few times a month and stays on his grind the rest of the time. Sounds like a pretty fuckin sweet life to me: good job, getting paid to DJ, and traveling.



The vibe definitely went up a few notches when Emynd stepped behind the decks. He effortlessly started dropping his heat all over the motley assemblage of dancers on the floor (a good chunk of which Mawkus said looked like they came from a gay wedding...I'll let you visualize that on your own). The first hour was mainly Bmore/Philly and he dropped it down while still keepin it hype with the club rap for the second hour. I couldn't tell you how many exclusive tracks there were, or if he dropped any, but it was all dope. He even departed from the Dirty South and played Luniz 'I got 5 on it.' He got some Bay points for that. Despite the less than ideal turnout, it was a great show. Emynd is a dope DJ and a really nice guy, so if you haven't heard about him, check him out:

My suggestion would be to pick up the Crossfaded Bacon EP on Turntablelab.com. One side for Emynd, and one side for his homie Bo Bliz (who you should also peep). You could practically DJ a whole set with doubles of this record. Check out the websites above for the rest of his discography and info. Next time he's in your town DON'T SLEEP (I mean you LA)!!!!!!

Our Mangrove Roots

Hey all,

In case anyone wonders what KCPR used to look like, check out these pics. A great and wonderful friend of mine sent these to me today. She took them before the radio station was gutted and relocated to the third floor of the Graphic Arts building. Now kids can smoke in the stairwell and only worry about peeps coming up, not coming down.


If you look close, you can see flyers made for the Robot Party (BEST FUCKIN' PARTY ANYONE HAS EVER NOT KNOWN ABOUT), the R Party and The Alice in Wonderland Party. Those were the last of their kind, as the ol' heads graduated and the new young crowd came in with their Facebook and their Proactive and NuRave Electro bullshit. I will say this, we were literally the only one's in the whole central coast who loved Ed Banger long before all the Frat Boys and Soro-Hoes play it when they're keg-standing and promoting underage drinking through initiation. Oh yeah, you can kind of see the poster for One AM Radio. They came and played at the now defunct Dwelling back in the day and it was awesome. Daedelous showed up with his prototype drum machine and blew all 13 of us in attendance away.


Yup thats vinyl. Yup, we still got sent MAD wax. Yup, thats a ladder because the best albums were those you found running in 5 minutes late to your show between classes.



I think we had the FCC walk through that door into the MCR and probably give KCPR the biggest scare in our 65 year history. I remember that year being the year of the whip, as the music directors, general manager, and business directors all cracked it hardcore. We made all the necessary changes and proved that KCPR was a viable and respectible club at Cal Poly, despite their relentless silent treatment of us during my years as a DJ.



The station has alot of memories for a shit load of DJs, and I don't think any of us will forget it. KCPR was the first home to Weird Al Yankovich, as his first single was recorded in the bathroom across the hall. I don't know if many have actually recorded there since, but I always felt I touched history every time I sat on that porcelain throne.
