Bombing

Back in SLO there was a store that used to pull in some sick prints every once in a great while, and I picked up a Grenade shirt with an onslaught of missles all around the bottom of the T. It was right when all-over prints started gettin' some game play and the SLO town was startin' to smell like the same thing over and over again... My army green Grenade (they don't make this print any more) was like Trainwreck on the weekends, some sick shit. I was really into grafitti and throwin' shit up around town. I was frequenting ArtCrimes and have recently been catching up. Tangent: This weekend someone asked me if I was a Black Panther. Here's TomoZ from Forli, Italy.

My commute to work puts me past about 15 -20 different pieces from Twin Peaks to 2nd Street/80 East aka Bay Bridge (via 18th street to Mission). I'm basically getting to see most of the writers from Castro, Mission, and Downtown everyday on my way to work. This is something I've always enjoyed about being in SF, there's grafitti everywhere! I don't have a digital camera yet (I know, I live in the stone ages), but once I do, I think I'll take it upon myself to do some cataloging of my favorite pieces around this town. Heres an artist from France that goes by the name of Nasty. For those in the know, I alter ego as The Nasty when I'm feelin' dark techno. Speaking of which, Foniks let me know that he's puttin' together a mix tape entitled (Don't Exercise Near Animals. He asked me for a few drops and I can't wait to hear what he's got in store for us. Be on the lookout LA, Foniks is gonna teach you how to work it out!

Hombre and Juice from Germany and Switzerland

Back in SLO, Reverend Nero, Foniks, and I somehow met up with Juice; Mixmaster Mikes brother and Doze Green Collaborator. He hooked up with posters, music, art, websites, and home movies of him hanging out with Scratch Pickles crew in Daily City. It was quite amazing. When we met, we went over to his house out in Grover Beach (of all places...) and it was like being in those grafitti books you get at Urban Outiffters, TRUE SF, KidRobot toy stores, and the biggest hip-hop catalog anyone has ever seen... all at the same time. We chickened out when he asked if we wanted to go writing with him one night... we must have been high. Anyways, we even got to see some origional artwork still in the making that was going to be displayed out in a gallery in NYC. Doze's characters are easily recognizable on his own, but his gallary work is filled with icons and symbols attributed to Juice. It was such a great pleasure to have met him and for him to share his lifes work with us. Here's a vid from last year featuring Doze going bonkers at Fifty24SF.

Devil winds

So, for those not in the know, there have been fires all over southern california. I lost count while watching the news and they are evacuating people from towns. I happened to be out in the area near the fires hanging out with my roommate in the house she was taking care of for a few days. We were chillin at the poolside and came indoors to find that every news channel was broadcasting updates on wildfires that were being pumped up due to the Santa Ana winds, or Devil winds as some call them.

Anyways, in a mostly unrelated story, I spent all day picking pine needles off of a x-mas tree for an Audi commercial today. Big ups to my man Gary for hookin some cash flow up. We sat in a park (which had also caught ablaze back in May apparently) and took leaves off of fucking x-mas trees while somewhere close to or in excess of 1200 acres had gone up in flames in surrounding areas. I came home, started messing with some samples on my MPC and made this track. My first track that has been posted on the internet. Finally, after a ridiculous amount of time has passed where I said I was going to put something on the internet, it happened. So, without further ado, I give you a beat with the only name I could think of at that moment in time: Santa Ana. I apologize for the file size, but I like quality, and the piece of donkey hole program I use to "edit" (I use that term very Very loosely) stuff I record straight off my MPC didn't export a 128-bit mp3 without sounding a little off. Enjoy it, knowing that the winds we sometimes embrace at night feed the fires that grow here outside of Los Angeles.

Two Radio Mixes...One Day...Biaaaatch!

Overall, my mixing skills are coming together. I'm very pleased. It's not perfect, but I'm to the point now where I'm where I want to be; where I can drop whatever I want into the mix, and can do it. Soon, I'll move on to learn hip-hop mixing, something I didn't want to do until I was confident enough with my mixes to go forward.

I've been procrastinating with mixes I owe for three overseas radio shows, and a person who did me a favor....that's two years procrastinating! I have no excuse, except that I've been struggling on and off with gaining mucho confidence to do polished, flawless mixes. Now I'm almost there, though, so I need to put out, as Foniks, Mawkus and Loco keep telling me.

I have to say that I'm really fortunate to have a mix show, because it forces me to not suck! Fortunately, I never had anyone call the phones, send me email, or tell me in my face that my mixing sucked, but I knew I had my days. Especially when I wasn't practicing, I was trying to balance that with my other obligations.

Well I didn't get to practice this week, either...just too much to do and a lot of catching up to accomplish. So no mixing on Urban Landscapes last Thursday (decided to drop a couple of guest mixes instead), but yesterday...Saturday....I more than made up for things witih a two-fer.

Yesterday morning (Saturday 20 October), I filled in for DJ Sasquatch on his Electronic Immersions radio show. So ended up getting my studio monitor (a real godsend for helping to ensure that my mixes flow smoothly), two bags of records, and other various accessories...and left the computer at home. Yep that's right, it was time to pull out some of my favorite records, some I've never mixed in before on any show. The day was gorgeous, and I decided to try and spin sort of a summery vibe. I stumbled a little in the beginning, and found that I had to fix the needle on one of the cartridges (which is why you'll hear the first and third song kinda funny-sounding). That was a fun one.

Later on, I returned to do Club 91. I was in a drum n'bass mood, so I pulled out favorites, including some I've never played before, and I was smooooookin'! I really dig the energy of good drum n'bass, especially my favorite type...liquid soul. The faster BPM makes mixing the music easy. I enjoyed that one, too.

And guess what? I recorded them both for you to listen to and judge for yourself!

I'm too lazy-assed to do several post links, so to Club 91's Myspace Blog to download the shows (playlists included). That's two, two, two 2-hour mixes in one day. Yeah bwooooooy!

MPC'ed Nostalgia

A moment in history: We were lunar, gettin' spiritualized via Foniks' deep beats. Had to record the session we were mellowin' in. So real.

Sorry for not posting up lately, been busy with crazy shit i.e. science conferences full of beautiful Latina women in Kansas City, stayin' up in escuela and gettin' familiar with KSDT. I'll throw up a better post later in the days to come. Stay tuned!

Shout outs to Luis, Carlos, Sara, las boricuas y mi gente en SACNAS que estan haciendo todo en el ciudad! Pa' que sepan!

Slam Dunk

I love these kicks. Hella bought these at the now defunkt Copeland's Sports in Modesto. I was up on the flashy kicks before kids knew flashy kicks were hip. You shoulda seen the looks I got when I wore these with shorts! Now everybody and their moms got kicks with colors like mine. I've even seen a bum down in the 'loin wearin some beat-up Nike Dunk Highs. Quite the trip.

Last Thursday, October 11, 2007 The Reverend Nero Ceasercelebrated his 24th Birthday.Moshi Moshi (Located in the Protreo Neighborhood) was a bomb ass sushi restaurant with the freshest fish in town. Its said that the best seafood chefs in the city buy their fish not far from this restaurant. I've known Nero before the Bay has known Nero as Nero, so that makes me a Roman too, right? Anywho, hella heads up in his place, too much weed up in his face, late at night invade his space, you wouldn't even know if he invades your space. Reverend Nero & Kae Hope are the Wrong Hands.
"Ooooh. Damn. Devious plan. Its not the right, this is the wrong hands!"

Found this shit on youtube. I wanna see some kids in the bay do this shit.

Last but not least, shouts to Michelle Musical for holding it down over at the X Y Z bar Tuesdays for Windustry Night 6-10pm. Swanky is the name and martini's are the game for this downtown hotspot. Sounds like a great place to meet after work for some happy hour drinks and fresh beats. Her myspace page boasts her expansive resume and history. Maybe she's got a few tips for the Decknicians on how to get some gigs in our cities. Whatcha' say DJ? Residencies are on our list of goals for the west coast.

Rant for Rent

Alrighty. Someone help me understand why bad dj's get big gigs. It bugs me. Are they all bark but no bite. Do they only perform well @ their dive-bar weekly? whats the deal? I'm sorry, but Jefrodisiac and Richie Panic sucked. If this is any reflection of what their weekly Frisco Disco @ the Transfer (Church @ Market SF), I don't think I want to go. But its where all the 'sters go to be scene and hip. DJ OMAR layed out a great opening set 9:30-10:30. I have always been a bit skeptical about Popscene's Resident DJ, but last nights opening set was fabulous. He strayed away from the "Pop Scene" that Jefrodisiac and Richie Panic attempted to exploit, keeping it real for the heads and true ravers. Frisco Disco is poppin', but @ what cost? Check it out and see for yourself Saturday Nights @ the Transfer (198 Church Street (between 14th St & Market St.

The suprise guest for the night was a rompin' dj set from Ed Banger label-mate DJ Mehdi. Frisco Disco had totally made me loose my buzz and the Midnight Juggarnauts sent me to space... I needed something to bring back in the mood for Justice. DJ Mehdi killed it like commuters on I-880: (http://www.nbc11.com/slideshow/news/14318932/detail.html)
When DJs throw down sets like his, where the mixing is solid and the track selection is flawless, everyone in the crowd just feels it. I can remember people coming to up to me at a DJ competition I had entered into and told me that the crowd really got into my music (of which I was the only Dance/house/electro/bmore/sleaze-hop track selector) when I got into my music. DJ Mehdi was dancing like he was in the crowd and the audience responded. Fuckin' great set.

Here's his "Signature (Thomas Bangalter edit)"video:

What can I say about Justice? Heavenly. I especially liked what they were playing about 45 minutes into their set. They brought it back to some classic French house shit. There was a row of us in the back going completely nuts while everyone around us stopped dancing to get another drink. The heavy shit don't weigh me down, it lifts me up. Fuck cowbell, give me more bass!!! And their encore was just dope with their cut up slayer sample timed up into some BPMs that could have very easily been mixed in the DJ Funk's remix of Waters of Nazareth. DOOOOOPE! I loved it. Now I really need to get me a black leather jacket.

This show is gonna be bomb. We saw Justice the last time they were in SF a while ago... crowd was at 8th capacity and when people jumped on stage to sing along to "We Are Your Friends", the dance floor was empty. That night they played with MSTRKFT. Honestly, I thought MSTRKFT's set was far better than Justices... but now they have a bangin' new album and quite the live show. Maybe they'll bring the same setup as Coachella. Nevertheless, I CAN NOT WAIT FOR TONIGHT!

Justice with Busy P the last time they were in 'Frisco
...where's my black leather jacket, dammit!

Last Saturday's Club 91...Go Ahead!

So it turns out that taking in my own studio monitor to do my show makes a world of difference, especially when the new station's monitors has a built-in delay of a few milliseconds...enough to throw off mixes when trying to make use of them.

So anyhow, here's a new one for you to listen to. It's from last Saturday. It's not flawless, and I've had to edit in a couple of places because one of the needles wanted to play mainly from one channel in those instances.

Otherwise, hope you enjoy!

Head Bobbin' Music

So when you find yourself really feeling a particular song in public, chances are more than likely that a part of your body is moving. For me, I bob my head given the circumstances. Most people just glare at me when I'm in the head-bobbin' mode but I barely notice. If you're in San Diego and you see some thick-framed-glasses kid with a fro bobbin' his head to whatever is playing in his headphones, he'll probably be listening to something along the lines of the following...

MF Doom - Vinca Rosea

Madlib - The Comeback

J Dilla (RIP) - Airworks

Her Name is Grub & She Loves Me

Living in San Diego has been a whole new experience for me, especially with adjusting to a new school and what not. The one thing that stands out is the love that I get from the fat cat that lives with us. Given that she's peed on my bed three times already, I know it's all out of love. How else can you show your love? She wallows around and tries to look sexy for me whenever I notice her. She's got her flirt game on lock. Because of her, I've dedicated this post to the one that never ceases to express her feelings with some lovely songs that are true to the heart. This one's for you, Grub.

Sly, Slick & Wicked - Sho' Nuff

Minnie Riperton - Baby This Love I Have
