Less Than Zero - 1987
I know I know... I've been on this weird 80's movie trailer and associated video tip lately, but this is what summer in the city does to you.
ps: I do play yacht rock.

CINESOUNDS TONIGHT!

Come on out to Culver City @ the Mandrake tonight. We got a whole lotta ass-kicking goin on since we're screening Terminator and Rambo, the OG versions. No cover so your bitch ass doesn't have an excuse to not come out and enjoy the beautiful nighttime weather. If you know one of the DJs, they'll spot you a drink (or two if you're lucky).

EMYND

So me and Mawkus went to go see Emynd for the 'More on the Floor' event just southeast of the Fashion District in Downtown LA. We got there a little after midnight expecting it to be packed. Los Angeles musta been sleeping because there weren't nearly as many people as there should've been. Half the people didn't even look as if they knew who the fuck Emynd was (sucks for them). Anyways, we went into the loft/warehouse space and watched Mike B spin for a little. We noticed the man from Philly was chillin right near the bar so we went to go chat it up. First impression: Emynd is one cool-ass dude. He didn't give off any type of cooler-than-thou vibe and was generally appreciative that we had come out to see him. I'm sure he would've been more appreciative had we been two hot chicks, but we're not, so whatevs. Anyway, it turns out that he's got a day job which takes him to France on occasion, he gets booked a few times a month and stays on his grind the rest of the time. Sounds like a pretty fuckin sweet life to me: good job, getting paid to DJ, and traveling.

The vibe definitely went up a few notches when Emynd stepped behind the decks. He effortlessly started dropping his heat all over the motley assemblage of dancers on the floor (a good chunk of which Mawkus said looked like they came from a gay wedding...I'll let you visualize that on your own). The first hour was mainly Bmore/Philly and he dropped it down while still keepin it hype with the club rap for the second hour. I couldn't tell you how many exclusive tracks there were, or if he dropped any, but it was all dope. He even departed from the Dirty South and played Luniz 'I got 5 on it.' He got some Bay points for that. Despite the less than ideal turnout, it was a great show. Emynd is a dope DJ and a really nice guy, so if you haven't heard about him, check him out:

CROSSFADED BACON

My suggestion would be to pick up the Crossfaded Bacon EP on Turntablelab.com. One side for Emynd, and one side for his homie Bo Bliz (who you should also peep). You could practically DJ a whole set with doubles of this record. Check out the websites above for the rest of his discography and info. Next time he's in your town DON'T SLEEP (I mean you LA)!!!!!!

Post-Bundependence Day
Bundependence Day for me was legit. I got real mellow between all the sangria and grape flavored blazing going on, as my room still smells like swishers. As of late, I've been listening to a lot of Italian shit from the 70s. I swear, the orchestrations they put into their work are real deep when you break down the individualized layers. Every little detail was fanatically crucial then, since you can literally feel the song like it was someone physically massaging down your ears wherever you are. All in all, I've noticed that whenever I play this song, our house bunny wanders into my room and posts up. Bun knows his shit.

Happy Birthday Claude Vonstroke
I moved to San Francisco 3 weeks fresh off my BS degree and on the first Sunday of Dirtybird Records infamous park parties. I remember finally unloading the last box form the U-Haul and immedietly racing to Golden Gate Park for one of the best experiences in my life. I was a fan of the label all throughout college and frequently played Claude Vonstroke, Justin Martin, and Christian Martin tracks on Club91. I've been fortunate enough to have befriended J.Phlip, Dirtybirds leading lady and the definition of big things in small packages.
Last night, J.Phlip, Justin Martin, Catz and Dogz, and about 250 of their closest friends all came to Harry Denton's Starlight Room to celebrate Claude Vonstroke's Birthday. Let me tell you, this is a hell of a place to throw a fucking party. Located on the 21st floor of the Sir Frances Drake Hotel, you could see a pretty spectacular view of San Francisco's Union Square all the way out past Portrero Hill. There's something about having a party in a Hotel that brings me back to that enhanced sense of rebellion I haven't felt much since high school. You know, that feeling you get when you're making out with girls in the theater parking lot or sneaking into motel pools after hours and scrambling when the cops come. Except this time, its backed with too much booze and some serious hometown techno. One thing that is always refreshing about Dirtybird is their overwhelming sense of family. All of them are massive on their own, but when you get them all together in the city that they call home, its like welcoming back champions. Happy Birthday Claude Vonstroke! Thanks for having a fucking epic party!

May You Moonwalk in Peace

Special installment of Cinesounds @ the Mandrake (2692 S. La Cienega) to honor the late & great MJ. We'll be reminiscing about the days when his nose was attached and he still had pigmentation. Moonwalk in peace Michael. Oh shit, what's gonna happen to Bubbles?!!
