Winter Break So Cloudy

I've been such a lazy bum since being on break and it feels amazing. I'm not really sure what to put to describe this mix I made but I'm sure you'll get the idea once you listen to it. It's a half hour mix that has some next level ambient interludes and hazy undertones. Go and give it a listen.

End Of Oh Seven

Artwork by Chucho from Indianapolis, Indiana.

This last weekend the Brotherhood had a reunion at Spektikal, a monthly at Shine (1337 Mission St) where techno reigns. It was a blast. Prime Mover, Lacosse, and Curly were in full force. Shout outs to Barclay, one of the DJ's of the night, who wanted me to drop a mix for him and test my skills out live. Heads up for Loco on a flyer soon to come.

Artwork by Joys from Italy.

Here's a mix I put together for Curly and his Savagemethods.com site (hit him up cause this guy hustles harder than commercial rap). Its a funky mix with a fidget twist, so enjoy. Somewhere in the middle of the mix my computer started to drag and the mix comes in and out... at least nobody left the dance floor. Enjoy!

Sip Sip

Here's a little 20min. mix I made for some establishments to listen to. I want a spot to DJ at on the regular because my bedroom is too crowded and the VIP line is ridiculous. Pop a sixer or a tall boy and get FONKAY!!!

Love Sweet Sound

Now its been a long minute since I've posted last and I don't have any excuses. It's been a Loco year and its finally coming to an end. Velanche and Urban Landscapes are having their 10 year blowout party down in LA LA Land on January 4 and you know its gonna blow up! Hella DJ's and a band and its free! There ain't no excuse not to go. Congratulations Velanche! A decade behind you and you've got a lot (his room overflows with records, CDs, promos, exclusives, equipment, and magazines its crazy) to show for it.

This new track by Groove Armada has been on major repeat in the stereo on my commute accross the bay everyday. I love it! Its so heavy and deep and funks like the junk in my trunk (soccer bag + 3 weeks of laundry left in the sun). The remix by Mark Knight and Funkagendas extends it about 2 minutes and will deffinetly keep the floor hot and sweaty.

Hey DJ's, can I make a request for Velanche's 10 year party?

"Freakshow on the dance floor, is that you I smell?"

Since being home for winter break, I've come back to some of my old favorite music videos from back in the day. These videos hold mad memories for me. Check 'em.

Ian Pooley is one of the realest dudes in dance music. This record is hard to find in the states because it was only commercially released in Europe but those that have it know it's ever so golden. It makes me wanna go wander the streets of Barcelona all over again. Shout outs to 2001 for having me put this on repeat erryday.

Another classic by Ian Pooley. He's got that definitive house sound that he captivates beautifully with his vocalists. Dude knows what's up when it comes to capturing the right scenario for his songs too. Man, I want to go to South America so bad.

Probably one of the greatest songs ever given to us by the funk phenomenon known as Armand Van Helden. I remember I had this song on repeat when his album, Killing Puritans, came out. As tribute, I realize I need to start telling girls that I'll house them when they're in my hut. No joke.

This song isn't old since it came out within the past year but I just really like it because it illustrates one of the facets that makes Defected Records one of my favorite labels. It's all about this remix using real strings!

Club 91 - A Broken Tribute to Goya Distribution, UK

A few weeks ago, a UK vinyl distributor called Goya closed its doors. With its closing comes an interesting chapter in the nu-jazz/broken beat scene. While the music continues to find its audience, a major player's closure means a vital pipeline has now been cut.

I feel that somehow, the music will continue to get out there. Hopefully, other distributors will take up the slack and put out the CD's and the wax. Many breakthrough labels in the scene such as Bitasweet, Laws of Motion, Fluid Ounce, People, Papa Recordings, Earthproject, and Neroli among others made Goya their home base. Time will tell what's to become of them in the future, but one moves forward.

So this week, I was inspired to do a mix as a tribute to Goya. I felt it was even more fitting, since I ended up accidentally leaving my Serato records at home. Good thing I've pulled out loads of vinyl for this mix, which includes labels that Goya has distributed over its 10-year existence.

And the playlist goes like this...
  • Quango - Trash Da Junk (Dub)
  • Soul Dhamma - Flower (Scuba Underwater Garden Dub)
  • I:Cube - Adore (King Britt's Scuba Remix)
  • Shades of Soul - Give In To Me (4 Hero Remix)

Makin' It Rain Till The End of the Year!

I can't wait till the quarter is over. I'm so ready for winter break. I've been immersed in school all the while maintaining the musical grind. Shout outs to my homeboy Matt K. for hooking me up with his scratch mixer. It hasn't helped me at all with the school part of my life but practicing my chirps and flares when I should be studying has been way worth it. Anyway, I'll leave you all with some songs that have been on heavy rotation. Find me listening to these when I'm high on caffeine in the library at school...

The Undisputed Truth - Walk On By (download link)

I don't know how many covers exist of this song but this one is my favorite. I'm sure you'll figure out who sampled this version.

El DeBarge - I Call Your Name (download link)

This is probably my favorite song in the history of the universe right now. No one can fuck with El DeBarge. They're so real, they make me want to get a jeri curl. No joke. I'm so serious. The intro alone is so epic. And I'm sure you'll also figure out who sampled this one as well.

Pilooski - Love is Wet (download link)

This song is so chill. Pilooski is such a fiend for his edits. All those French electro kids need to take notes on his production style because he takes it to a different level. Troof.
