Here's a hot one from ya boy & boss man Colonel MC. If you're in to unfamiliar, The Colonel represents and residents for San Francisco's premier & Internationally respected Drum & Bass collective; Compression. Residents also include DJ's Aye-N, Mal, Lukino, Sharp, and Danny The Wildchild. They've got a two times bi-weekly event called Stamina. In English: basically the best D&B out right now for FREE and its 18+ twice a week.

Compression is also connected to Sublife Recordings and the World Of Drum and Bass mix / party series. That being said, The Colonel needs no introduction because reputation precedes him. He was also resident at my GoldSweat monthly at [then called] Triple Crown. Mandated to be wicked all around.

As always, mix was recorded live on a fogged in Saturday afternoon in the Sunset. It was then sent over to the Lower Haight for a talking-too over champagne toast. A step aside from your 'typical' bass fodder but definitely a step in the right direction considering how much fun the replay value is.

Inspired somewhat by Chrissy Murderbot and his infamous mix a month 2010, but more along the lines of my actually posting all of the mixes I record on my own time, for my own personal pleasure. All of us Decknicians were instilled with the idea that the only way you can get better is to take time to stop and listen to yourself. We now never go anywhere without some sort of digital recorder and you can find us posting audio to a bunch of stuff all the time.

We've really outdone ourselves. Not only was it the first time in the history of our mix show did we manage to get over two DJ's spinning in one week, but we have four DJ's! Yes, it was quite a bit to handle, but in the end things worked out great.

We have locals Fatty Knuckles, DJ Lytic and Groovemunk doing it, and at the end it was the return of original Club 91 host Loco, traveling back to his old stomping grounds from the Bay Area.

Taylor McFerrin + Nikko Gray 3/3/11 @ Little Temple

It's been a minute LA, but this last Thursday @ Little Temple made me realize I need to get back on the blog wagon. I had the pleasure of seeing both Nikko Gray and Taylor McFerrin (as well as some surprise guests) perform for Nu-Thursdays (put on by Nu-Soul: www.nu-soulmag.com). I have seen bits of Nikko's performances in the past as she is a staple in the love-friendly nightlife of LA. She once again laced the mic with sugar like the sultry songstress she is. Always in diva-mode, she kept that healing feminine energy flowing. From downright dreamy tunes to hip-shakers, she knows how to flex in many forms. She also had guest MC, Chris Young join her to throw in some rap flavor for a couple joints. Nikko Gray = Voice + Looks + Vibe = WIN.

Next up on the bill: Taylor McFerrin

After a little intermission with DJ Destroyer on the decks, Taylor McFerrin took the stage with a Rhodes, midi controllers, and his mouth. Deceptively humble in his vibe, he proceeded to build straight, uncut DOPENESS from scratch via live looping of keys, samples, and beatboxing (dude needs to jam w/ Rahzel if he hasn't already). To say the least, the McFerrin seed contains some sort of inter-galactic magic (his pops is Bobby McFerrin if you hadn't figured it out yet). Taylor brought Nikko Gray back on stage, as well as Chris Young and they proceeded to improvise their way through a song that honestly sounded better than a lot of pre-rehearsed bits I've heard from other artists. He then brought up fellow Brainfeeder signee, Austin Peralta. An odyssey is about the closest approximation for a word that can describe the musical journey they took my ears on. McFerrin is a deft beatboxer who understands rhythm to the core, and Peralta, well, he's legit as fuck on keys, truth. They had a free-form chemistry that only true musicians possess and carried on a musical conversation that probably only half of the audience fully understood (unless they have a grasp of music theory). Be on the lookout for more from Taylor McFerrin. He's got an honest, unpretentious, and highly-skilled nature that will continue to serve him as he gives the world more of his musical goodness.

Back in early February, we were very fortunate to have Dionysius, aka DJ Payne, back in the KCPR studios. It's been a long while, and we've had several near-misses trying to get him back, but he entered the studio and came through. As one of the most popular and sought-after DJ's in the county, there doesn't seem to be a week where he doesn't have a DJ gig. Good to have him back, and we hope you'll enjoy this mix recorded live during the show.

So the good homie DJ Pound made this mix over the weekend for Ampsoul and it's full of that heavy in-your-face offensive beat shit, like the kind of music your parents would tell you to turn down or off completely. But on the real, if there's one dude who's been doing beat shit for a while reppin' San Diego hard, it's DJ Pound. Being one of the major DJ taste-makers in America's finest city, this mix definitely demonstrates his versed prowess in musical beatology (yeah, I just made that word up) as well as DJ showmanship with his technique. Moreover, he's also got a split 7-inch coming out soon with the other good homie eLan who I've blogged about before on here. Finally! The dude of all left coast DJ dudes aka DJ Morse Code finally uploaded his two infamous Fusion Batches mixtapes. I have no idea how hard I looked for these and asked friends if they had any leads to copping them but it seemed like I'd never get them into my possession. Even meeting Morse Code at the Do-Over over the summer and asking him what the deal was with those tapes, he said they'd be re-upped soon and he was in the process of making a third. Anyway, I definitely recommend you download these two mixtapes and listen to them when you're getting cozy with the homegirl Mary Jane or any one of your homegirls in general. They're full of a lot of pristine cuts and syrupy jazz-funk that drips with that yum. High-ly recommended listening!

First of all, the October 30th set with guest DJ Athelias was lost due to some tech-related shenanigans with the recording server. He'll return to the show sometime in 2011.

Meanwhile, on this episode of Club 91 we have DJ Sean Crandal making his debut appearance to the KCPR studio. He's been at the local DJ game for awhile, whether it's participating as a DJ or organizing events through his event outlet, The People, Inc.

The show was started a little late, plus unfortunately a bit of the tail end of the show, about roughly 15 minutes, was lost. If anything had to be lost, it was about a couple of songs. But we also had a good bookend interview that was also lost, but you'll get to listen to a little bit of him speaking a few words at the start of the show.

Ah, the best-laid plans.

Due to some scheduling snafus, the guest DJ that I thought I had scheduled for this week didn't get the notice of said changes. Last week's DJ, Nikoo, was going to take the spot this week, but got bumped up a week when the DJ originally scheduled for that date backed out.

So instead of me starting off with a one-hour set, you'll have me for three. In the end, things worked out nicely. I think the set and the music selection are pretty solid, so I hope you enjoy the tunes and the mix. There's no playlist this week, but there were bunches of unreleased goodies included in my set.
